Haywood County Line

Throughout the early 1800s, families migrated into West Tennessee from other parts of the United States and beyond. The region had long been part of the Chickasaw hunting grounds until the Jackson Purchase of 1818, when the Chickasaw ceded their lands in western Tennessee and western Kentucky to the United States. Even before the treaty, North Carolina had issued claims to large tracts of this land, including grants connected to Revolutionary War service.

After 1818, newcomers began settling in the region, clearing forests, establishing farms, building schools and churches and creating communities for themselves and future generations. These are the stories of the men and women in my family line who were among those newcomers settled in and around Haywood County, Tennessee.
